In a recent study, the immunomodulatory activity of Black Cumin Seed extracts (sample 1-4) were assessed by the release of mediators [Interleukin-2 (IL-2), Interleukin-6 (IL-6), Prostaglandin-E2 (PGE2)] in primary human T-lymphocytes, monocytes, and A549 human lung epithelial cells (Koshak et al., 2018). The details of the samples are given in Table 1.

Nigellin® AMBER and the cold pressed oil which are characterized by the highest level of Thymoquinone, showed the most remarkable effect on suppressing inflammatory mediators IL-2, IL-6, and PGE2 release from human T-lymphocytes (Fig. 2A, 2B and 2C). Also, these two extracts showed a marked suppression of IL-6 and PGE2 release in human monocytes (Fig. 3A and 3B). On the other hand, the extracts containing thymoquinone had a remarkable effect enhancing the release of PGE2 from A549 human lung epithelial cells (Fig. 4).

Conclusion

Thymoquinone-rich Black Cumin Seed extract (Nigellin® AMBER) has been studied for its potential to support respiratory wellness through its natural properties. Research suggests that this extract may contribute to the maintenance of healthy inflammatory responses within the body by modulating the release of inflammatory mediators in human immune cells, including T-lymphocytes and monocytes. Additionally, studies indicate a potential for supporting respiratory health, highlighted by its effects on human lung epithelial cells, which are explored for their role in promoting normal respiratory function.”
